And my husband, who works as a primary school chaplain, said that poetry is only ‘studied’ for a term or so, as though it’s an isolated topic…it made me feel so sad for those children! They are being starved of literature and living ideas.
Thanks, Miriam. In some ways I think it's almost better not to introduce poetry & literature if it's only to be dissected & isolated. I can't remember anyone rave about the literature they studied in school.
Hi Shannon, I just submitted an article for the Commonplace Quarterly on Poetry so I've have been thinking about metaphor & how it brings nuance whereas a lack of it creates polarisation. Appreciating poetry is a way of practicing Coleridge's idea of renewing our stock of metaphors. :)
