Home education is essentially a slow movement when you're not focussed on just the appearance of learning. An updated version of an article I wrote in 2019.
What a beautiful truth you have so wonderfully described! Your writing is such an encouragement to me as I continue into my 23rd year of homeschooling.
Hi Donna! Lovely to see your comment here. 23 years - hasn't that gone quickly! I have some fond memories of back in the day when you were still living here. Hope everything is going well for you & yours. X
Time has flown by indeed! We are well. 4 still homeschooling. 2 married and one more engaged to be married in Jan 2025 and joy of joys, a grandbaby due in April ☺️ Blessed.

Beautiful!! This was so encouraging not only as I homeschool my son but I’ve picked up art as a practice as an adult and have often been frustrated- realizing now it’s because I cared more about results than enjoying the slow cooker process 💗 thanks for sharing!!
Thank you for this timely encouragement Carol. I’ve heard similar advice before, but it seems I need constant reminders.
Only this morning I was fretting that my kids don’t appear to care about their history lessons… what am I doing wrong? I asked them today if there was a topic that interested them in their history readings which they’d like to watch a documentary about. Silence… so frustrating. But now you’ve reminded me that it’s not what we see (or don’t see) on the outside that is proof of their learning and growing. Deep and lasting things are slowly cooking, and I will be faithful to continue planting the seeds of ideas.
Hi Miriam! I've noticed that it may take a while and some maturity for the caring to be expressed. I heard one of my older sons say to a roomful of people that, ''I didn't realise how much work Mum did until I'd left home & had to do everything for myself!''
Sometimes my kids would moan or be uninterested about something (Plutarch & nature study come to mind) but I tried not to let that get me down and just persevered because I thought it was important.
That’s incredibly encouraging to hear this coming from one with so much experience Carol! Thank you!
I remember the earlier days when negative comments or whining from the kids would absolutely crush me. These days I have become much better at letting it ‘roll off like water on a ducks back’, and boy, does has it freed me up to be a better mother!
Hi Carol, would you mind if I shared this article with my local (Darwin, NT) homeschool groups on fb ? Experience and encouragement are necessary for the long haul :) Thanks very much, Angie Tester

Hi Joellen, yes! Caring more about the results & then when you don't see the results soon enough you're tempted to give up.
