So many favorites listed here! Took me down memory lane when we homeschooled. 💕 I’ve kept them for the grandkids to read.

Great tactic to suggest series to encourage young readers. You share a number of excellent entries on this list, and I’m glad to see you included some “non traditional” reading like Asterix and Tin Tin!

I like the sound of the Redwall series. I could read them to Iris as she has a vivid imagination peopled by animals, mostly, and Barry Chant is right that it is not being fostered by school. Mostly it is the other children. They do not understand what Iris is going on about and cannot seem to join in her imaginary games and tales. She persists though and that makes me so proud of her. Is this the same Barry Chant who came to our church back in 2018 and spoke to us on the Holy Spirit? He and his wife Veronica(?) were delightful. Thank you for the suggestions.

Yes, that would be him. His wife’s name is Vanessa. Koorong should have his books.

Iris would enjoy Little House in the Big Woods, if you haven’t read that before. My 4 & 6 yr old grandsons are obsessed with the Swallows & Amazon series - their mum is reading them aloud & she was surprised that they love the books so much. She bought some canvas to make a tent & is making the boys knickerbockers. I appliquéd a bird on a flag for them last week. 😊

I’ve been thinking about ideas & how necessary they are if you are going to write. I’ve seen some writing assignments given to children with no thought given to this. Imagination needs to be engaged first & it’s amazing what comes after that.

I thought it was him. Such a great couple. I do have Little House in the Big Woods so I will start that next week. Great idea! It is nice to hear that other Mums sometimes get a surprise at how kids react to a book or ideas. I still underestimate Iris. G.K.Chesterton wrote so succinctly about young children and their reading and obsessions so it makes delightful sense that your grandsons are in love with that series. Yay to Mums and Grandmothers who encourage that imagination. Your bird on a flag will no douby feature in many an adventure!

I see lots of familiar favorites here! A series that has been popular with my youngest son are the Freddy the Pig books by Walter Brooks.
