“Books are the carriers of civilization...They are companions, teachers, magicians, bankers of the treasures of the mind. Books are humanity in print.” - Barbara W. Tuchman
Wow! Some great books here, many of which are not familiar to me, but sound like my 15 year old history-loving, voracious-reader son would love. Also, I did not know that about Rosemary Sutcliff, but we do enjoy her books here too, our first introduction to her being her excellent re-tellings of The Iliad (Black Ships Before Troy) and The Odyssey (The Wanderings of Odysseus). Thanks for sharing all these authors and titles.
Thank you for this great list of teen books! My son at 11 or 12 loved 39 Steps book, and has been begging for more by that author, but I’ve been unsure if they were ok for him. I’m finishing up The Dean’s Watch myself, and it is lovely. My 15 yo daughter is already an Elizabeth Gouge fan, so she will want to read it next. This list is a wonderful reminder of all the quality literature we can seek out for the teen years.
Hi Allison, you're very welcome. If your son liked The 39 Steps he'd enjoy the rest of the Richard Hannay books. Mr Standfast is my favourite. John MacNab is a little different, more light-hearted than most of Buchan’s other novels & is a fun adventure story.
This is great! Thank you, Carol.
