Read Along: For the Children's Sake by Susan Schaeffer Macaulay
I've been planning to start a read along of this book for some time and was nudged to get on with it recently!
As a soon to be new mother in 1988, a friend (also expecting her first) and I came across copies of For the Children's Sake at a women’s conference. This book was our first exposure to Charlotte Mason's philosophy in particular and home education in general. Although it’s now a well-known resource for home educators, it deserves to be known for more than that. Mason had deep insights into child psychology, mind training and character building. My friend and I went in different directions with our children’s education but we both benefitted from reading this book.
Whether you are a parent, a teacher, a grandparent, an aunty or uncle, or you have a heart for children, this book will show you how to extend learning to every facet of life. Good and true ideas may be found in many different contexts and this balanced and practical view of education and life will be beneficial whatever your background or beliefs.
So, you are invited to read along or just follow my thoughts on each chapter as I post over the next few months. I’ll begin putting my thoughts here on Substack in June so there’s time to purchase the book if you don’t already have it. I’ll also be drawing from my own practical experience and from books or articles that have enlarged my knowledge or have inspired me in some way.
For those of you in Australia, Koorong has the book on sale as I write. Blackwell’s Books is where I buy the occasional new book and they have it in stock, too.
Oh I’m looking forward to this!
I loaned the book to my friend and she finished it in time for me to get it back and revisit with you in June! Have you decided how we will read along with you?
